Back to Balance

The body you have is older than the world you live in. Health is what happens when the two are brought back into the same century.

The idea

We did not evolve for the last two hundred years.

For most of human time people walked, carried, hunted, gathered, slept in the dark, ate what they could find or fire could cook, and lived in small groups that actually knew them. That is not nostalgia. That is the environment the body was calibrated in.

Then, in a couple of centuries, we sat down, lit the night, filled the cupboard with food that has no season, separated work from muscle, and called the result progress. Much of it is. Surgery, vaccines, clean water and antibiotics are not the problem. The problem is the quiet, daily inversion of everything the organism still expects: long stillness, constant light, isolated days, and a diet invented in factories.

Back to Balance is not a call to abandon cities or medicine. It is a call to put back the old pattern underneath a modern life: move like a forager, eat like a cook, sleep like night still means something, and belong to a few people for real. The articles that follow are how.

The returns

Six old habits the last centuries quietly dropped

01

Move because the day requires it

Hunter-gatherers did not “work out”. They walked, carried, climbed, crouched and occasionally sprinted because the day asked them to. The modern error is not the gym. It is eight still hours, then forty minutes of invented strain.

02

Eat what a fire could cook

Animals, plants, fat, starch from the ground or the grain — prepared, not engineered. Ultra-processed food is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century invention. The gut and the brain have not caught up, and they are not going to.

03

Sleep when the light goes

Darkness used to be a fact. Electric light, then screens, told the body it was still afternoon at midnight. Circadian timing is not a wellness trend. It is how every cell keeps time, and we broke the clock.

04

Get the day on your skin

Outdoor light, outdoor air, heat, cold, and the ground underfoot. Indoor climate control is a comfort. It is also a sensory fast. The old body was built to meet weather, not to avoid it.

05

Belong to a few people, deeply

A foraging band was not a network. It was a handful of people who would notice if you were gone. Loneliness at scale is new. So is performing a self for strangers. The nervous system still keeps score the old way.

06

Let stress end

A chase ends. A hunt ends. A quarrel in a small camp ends. Email, news and status do not. Chronic activation is what the last couple of hundred years industrialised, and the heart, the sleep and the mood are where it shows.

The notes

Opening essays. Longer articles will land here.

These six notes state the case. When full articles arrive they take this grid. Send the pieces; they will be placed, titled, and dated as a journal, not as a corporate blog.

The body is not a Victorian invention

Agriculture is old. Industrial sitting, industrial sugar, industrial light and industrial loneliness are not. Most of what we call lifestyle disease is the bill for treating a Pleistocene organism as if it were designed in 1850.

Walking is the default human technology

Before cars, before chairs that recline, the ordinary day was miles. Restore walking as transport and thinking, not as a hobby you schedule if the diary allows. Strength can sit on top of that. It cannot replace it.

If your grandmother would not recognise it as food, pause

Not a purity test. A time test. Ingredients that did not exist for your great-grandparents are the ones the metabolism has had no generations to meet. Cook. Shop the outside of the store. Eat until you are done, not until the packet is.

Protect the dark as if it were a nutrient

Morning outdoor light sets the clock. Evening dimness lets it run down. A bright kitchen at 11 p.m. is a small, daily jet lag. The old habit was simpler: when the sun went, so did most of the light, and the brain took the hint.

A life with no weather is a life with no signal

Cold, heat, wind, unlevel ground. They are information the body uses to stay capable. Central heating and air-conditioning are civilised. Living entirely inside them is how capacity quietly leaves.

Finish the hunt

The old stresses were violent and short. Ours are mild and endless. Put a close on the day: a walk without a phone, a meal with people, a room that goes dark. The body can survive a spike. It cannot survive a spike that never ends.

What this is not

Not a war on modernity. Not medical advice.

Back to Balance is published by anyPhD. The experts in the network can write, review and argue the pieces. The name on the door of the journal is not the name of the consultancy, on purpose.

The list

Get the notes. Not a sales letter.

When a new article goes up, we send it. No product pitches from the consultancy in the same envelope. Unsubscribe whenever the old habits are enough.

We keep the address for this list only. We do not pass it on.
